New anesthesia technology makes surgery safer

Queensland University alumni have helped create world-class anesthesia technology to provide safer surgery for patients with airway obstruction.

A group of anesthesiologists at Princess Alexandra Hospital developed a procedure that allows surgeons to perform surgery on patients who were previously considered unsuitable for surgery.

Dr. Anton Booth, who was recently appointed as a senior lecturer at UQ Medical School, said the team combined two relatively new technologies.

Dr. Booth said: "According to traditional anesthesia methods, we expect patients to stop breathing because we place them in a medically induced coma."

"Our work as an anesthesiologist is to take care of the patient's breathing and keep the patient with continuous oxygen supply, usually by intubation.

"In patients with narrow airway surgery, we were unable to insert the tube into the trachea where the surgeon was trying to operate.

“Instead, we implemented a method of letting patients breathe spontaneously during anesthesia.”

Dr. Booth said the team complemented this approach by increasing the high-flow nasal oxygen supply previously used in intensive care and respiratory departments.

He said: "With this combination, we have been able to achieve anesthesia for patients with narrow airway.

"We have been able to achieve a fairly good improvement in oxygen levels in patients with deep anesthesia.

“This is a modern alternative to traditional technology and has great potential in many other situations.”

This technology has been confirmed to help save at least one life.
