Fat cells in the head of Drosophila (red) (Source: Anna Franz)
"The fat cells are large enough, usually 1-4 cells can block the wound and play a role similar to "crustosis." In the process of wound healing, fat cells can excrete bacteria and help the production of antibacterial factors. Preventing the occurrence of infections." - This wonderful study was done by scientists at the University of Bristol. Using a model of fruit fly, they found that fat cells have an amazing effect in repairing wounds and preventing infections. Related research results were published in the Journal of Development Cell on February 26.

Fat cells "squirm" to the wound
In the past, we thought that fat cells were still. Now, Paul Martin and Will Wood led Anna Franz to discover that they can not only move, but also have their own specific migration methods. "They are not simply drifting (following lymphocytes in the blood)," the researchers explained.
Most of the migrating cells are moved for movement with tiny filopodia and lamellipodia. However, fat cells are different: they swim in a peristaltic constriction. To put it simply, fat cells do not rely on frictional movement, but migrate through the contraction of actin and myosin. "Visually, it's similar to creeping," Paul Martin said.
"Synergy" with immune cells
The researchers found that even without immune cells, fat cells can still reach the wound. Once they arrive, they collaborate with the immune cells hemocytes that have gathered there – hemocytes are responsible for “cleaning up†cellular debris, while fat cells tightly block the wound until new tissue is regenerated.
"They are like a team." The researchers speculate that in humans and other vertebrates, fat cells also play a role in wound healing. Of course, this requires more research verification.
