The most advanced LUKE biomimetic prosthesis for 8 years has finally been put into use

Release date: 2016-12-29

The LUKE bionic prosthesis of DARPA of the US military black technology department has made new progress. According to DARPA's official website, after eight years of development and two years of approval by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration), LUKE is finally entering production. But before commercial production, it will be used first in the US military. DARPA's biotechnology division recently provided two LUKE arms to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for use by doctors who require prosthetics.

LUKE was formerly known as the DEKA Arm System and was the brainchild of Segway founder Dean Kamen. Its full name is Life Under Kinetic Evolution, but readers familiar with science fiction Lei Feng should know that it was inspired by the movie "Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back", the character Luke Skywalker (Luke) The arm of Skywalker is the robot.

LUKE can process multiple instructions at once, which allows it to move as naturally as possible. In the early tests, LUKE was already available for combing, unlocking, and quite flexible.

According to DARPA, the LUKE arm can make very dexterous arm and hand movements, as well as grip feedback, through a simple and intuitive control system. The prosthesis is powered by a modular battery and is about the same size and weight as the human arm.

The development of mechanical legs has been more stable over the past two decades, but the robotic arms and hands have faced more challenges, in part because of the need for greater flexibility. Before the emergence of LUKE, the person who lost the upper arm had to use a relatively primitive fork device that had not changed since it was invented in 1912.

Later, DARPA launched the "Revolutionizing Prosthetics" program, which aims to develop an FDA-approved electromechanical prosthetic upper limb with near-natural control that enhances the independence and quality of life of the amputee. After eight years of development, LUKE has obtained FDA approval.

DARPA plans to make LUKE more flexible, just like a real human arm. According to DARPA's willingness, this prosthesis will provide greater flexibility, a more familiar sensory experience, and direct connection to the user's peripheral and central nervous system.
