PLOS ONE: New blood test, this time cancer is not detected, premature birth

An international team formed by David Olson, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology in the UK, developed a new blood test technology, but this time it was not cancer, but the risk of spontaneous abortion in pregnant women. The results were published in the journal PLOS ONE. .

Premature birth has been classified by the World Health Organization as one of the health problems of pregnancy and perinatal period. Every year, 15 million premature babies are born globally, and 1 million babies die. Even in developed countries, premature birth is still one of the leading causes of child death. Premature infants are also more likely to have a higher prevalence in their lives, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseases, so early prediction and intervention of preterm birth is important.

The research team consisted of clinicians, scientists, and biostatisticians. The subjects were 3,300 pregnant women volunteers recruited in Canada in 2008 to explore the association between maternal whole blood gene expression and the risk of spontaneous preterm birth.

At the time of blood collection, 17-23 weeks and 27-33 weeks of pregnancy, the researchers performed RNA extraction and microarray analysis on blood samples, and determined the clinical factors, whole blood gene expression and early-onset abortion by single gene analysis. In addition, 13 genes were also verified by real-time PCR.

The study found that clinical factors, whole blood genomic expression were associated with early-onset abortion risk in asymptomatic pregnant women.

Professor Olson said, “The new approach is important because it predicts which women have a risk of early-onset abortion, which will help develop new drugs and interventions that delay preterm birth and make sense for the health of newborns. ."

Co-author of this article, Professor Suzanne Tough of the Cardinal School of Calgary University, said, “Defining the risk of early-onset abortion in pregnant women during early pregnancy helps clinicians adopt a personalized approach to prevent preterm birth. However, Professor Olson pointed out that further research is needed to apply the technique to the clinic.
