Health Tips for the Elderly in Okinawa, Japan

The proportion of 100-year-olds in Okinawa is the highest in Japan. The favorite diet for old age includes rice, tofu, bamboo shoots, seaweed, and kimchi. Many elderly people also drink more than six cups of green tea each day.

Dr. Craig Wilcox of the International University of Okinawa in Japan has studied the longevity of residents of Okinawa. In his book Okinawa Longevity Crowd Research Project, he mentioned: residents of Okinawa The diet plan is well worth following because they eat as much food as possible at the bottom of the food chain.

In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, Dr. Wilcox said: “Okinawa residents are less likely to suffer from arteriosclerosis and stomach cancer, and there is a very high risk of developing hormone-dependent cancers such as breast and prostate cancer. On average, they eat three fish per week, a large amount of whole grain cereals, vegetables and soy products.They consume more tofu and kelp than people in other parts of the world. They also like to eat salmon and octopus. Foods rich in taurine can lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure levels."

Locally produced vegetables in Okinawa include: purple sweet potatoes (rich in flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamin E, and lycopene) and bitter melons (which act to lower blood sugar). Turmeric and jasmine tea can prevent cancer and they are a common diet for residents of Okinawa.

John Mather, director of the Institute for Aging and Health at the University of Newcastle in the United Kingdom, said in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian. “One of the secrets of longevity is to avoid the accumulation of damaged cells in the body. You should eat fish, beans, Nuts and whole grains, eat less red meat, dairy products and sugar, such a diet program will help reduce cell damage."
