Drinking coffee may worsen hot flashes and night sweats in menopausal women

Release date: 2014-07-29

When menopause is experienced, about two-thirds of women are affected by hot flashes and night sweats, and a new survey suggests that drinking coffee may worsen the hot flashes and night sweats.

Dr. Stephanie Faubion said: Although these results are preliminary, our research shows that limiting coffee intake is effective for women who suffer from hot flashes and night sweats after menopause.

Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee and cola, but it seems that caffeine has a different effect on women who begin to transition to menopause (ie, menopause). During the transition period, caffeine may improve their mood, memory and concentration.

The findings, published in the journal Menopause, were based on a study of more than 1,800 menopausal women between 2005 and 2011 comparing the symptoms between coffee users and non-users.

Treating menopausal symptoms is challenging, but there are many improved control strategies, says Faubion: One way to control annoying symptoms is to be careful about what to eat. This usually means giving up irritating foods and hot drinks, as well as caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.

Given that about 85% of Americans drink caffeinated beverages in some form every day, Faubion and her colleagues try to determine how caffeine drinks affect the severity of hot flashes and night sweats.

Regarding this issue, although previous studies provided different results. But current surveys show that taking coffee does exacerbate and worsen such symptoms. Faubion said: Avoiding coffee, maintaining a healthy weight, etc. can help control menopausal symptoms.
