According to the Bloomberg website, Google will work with Johnson & Johnson to develop robotic surgical equipment for the medical field. This is part of Google’s plan to increase its healthcare investment.
The two companies will explore ways to add advanced imaging equipment and sensors to surgical tools to help doctors during surgery. Specifically responsible for working with Johnson & Johnson is the life sciences department of Google X Labs.
Andy Conrad, head of the Google Life Sciences team, said in a statement Friday, "We will explore how smart software can provide information to doctors in real time during surgery." The parties did not disclose financial matters related to the collaboration.
Johnson & Johnson Chairman Gary Pruden said in a telephone interview, "We know that we need to work with partners in different fields. We have a relationship with Google Life Sciences in the early days. I can say that we have developed in the market. Long-term plans for mature products.†He said that their plan is to develop “natively†different products that are more flexible and economical than current products.
Robotic surgery is becoming more popular, and cooperation with Google will help Johnson & Johnson better compete with companies such as Intuitive Surgical. Of course, such cooperation also faces certain risks.
According to Vijay Kumar, an analyst at Evercore ISI, it takes years for other products to enter the market to challenge Intuitive's lead, as any new product needs to be rigorously reviewed by regulatory agencies. However, he still expects other companies to be involved in the field of medical robots.
